Cumbria Police received a call reporting that a male walker had fallen and dislocated his shoulder in Foxes Tarn Gully. His friend made the emergency call, and two passing climbers stopped to assist, helping keep the casualty warm while MRT made their way to the scene.
Due to the remote location and the time required to reach it, Coastguard Rescue 897 and Duddon & Furness MRT were requested to assist. Rescue 897 attempted to reach the casualty directly but was unable to access the site due to low cloud, instead uplifting MRT personnel as close as conditions allowed.
Once on scene, MRT treated and packaged the casualty, then lowered him down the gully on a stretcher using a rope system. The complexity of the injury meant the team used approximately £180 worth of medical supplies, including pain management, immobilisation equipment, and warming gear to stabilise the casualty before evacuation.
He was then stretchered further down the hill to a point low enough for Coastguard Rescue 199 to safely winch him for onward transport to West Cumberland Hospital. Team members then walked out into Eskdale, where vehicles had been repositioned to allow everyone to return to base.
Many thanks to Rescue 897, Rescue 199, (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) and Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team.
