Diagnosis

Cumbria Police received a report from a 2 members of the public stating that a male had fallen approximately 30 metres from Broad Stand. The passer‑by’s were unable to reach the casualty due to the terrain & needed to have phone signal for speaking with MRT, but two climbers were able to descend and provide initial assistance.

Helimed 58 and Coastguard Rescue 897 attended swiftly. Coastguard winched the casualty into the aircraft and landed next to H58, where doctors carried out further medical procedures due to his critical condition before transferring him to H58 for rapid transport to Royal Preston Hospital.

A second person was stuck on Broad Stand, so Duddon & Furness MRT were requested to assist. Meanwhile, the two climbers helped the injured man’s friend off Broad Stand. Three MRT members who had ascended on foot then took care of the friend and escorted him to the valley.

Incident started at 08:37 and ended at 13:25 making 4.8 hrs in total. There were 17 Wasdale team members involved and the incident occured at NY 20951 06857. Total rescuer hours: 82
