Cumbria Police received a call about four 18-year-old males who were stuck on Broad Stand and unable to get off. The team deployed, along with Coastguard Rescue 897. The heli was requested to assist in getting the heavy crag equipment up the hill, given it would have taken the team two hours or more to reach the casualties on foot and set up a rope system, and the group were already cold. Additional kit had to be taken as the exact location of the casualties was not known, and the team needed to be prepared for a long lower.
R897 was initially unable to get on scene, so lifted four team members up as close as possible to begin setting up ropes. The weather then cleared enough for the aircraft to get on scene, and all four casualties were winched off and flown down to the car park. R897 then returned to collect the remaining four team members who had been lifted up earlier.
Many thanks were extended to R897 for their excellent flying in difficult cloud conditions.
