Cumbria Police received a report from two passing walkers who had found a walker with multiple injuries, including head and arm trauma, near to Beck Head on Great Gable.
The Team Leader made a full callout immediately alongside Rescue 936 Coastguard helicopter from Caernarfon. Despite several attempts, R936 was unable to complete a winch onto scene due to the weather conditions. Once the MR advance party arrived on scene, the walker’s multiple injuries were assessed and treated from a now obvious very serious fall. He was then packaged in a heat blankets and a vapour barrier (to minimise further heat loss), vacuum mattress (to provide a full body splint to avoid unnecessary movement), and a casualty bag (more insulation).
The quickest transfer to the helicopter involved a strenuous uphill transfer using the wheel up to Beck Head. After a handover, the walker was flown for further urgent assessment and treatment in a specialist hospital.
Many thanks to the crew of Rescue 936 for their help once again. Thanks also to the two walkers who stayed and looked after the walker with clothing and a shelter until the team arrived. Also thanks to the The Wasdale Head Inn for taking care of his dog.
We hope the walker recovers quickly from his injuries.

Incident started at 13:58 and ended at 19:37 making 5.7 hrs in total. There were 19 Wasdale team members involved and the incident occured at NY 205103. Total rescuer hours: 108
