Cumbria Police received a call regarding a male who had been struck by falling rocks, resulting in head and hand injuries. The party was large, and while some members were able to make their way out on foot, two others were in precarious positions within the gill and required assistance.
Due to the location and the need for crag rescue equipment, Wasdale MRT, Duddon MRT, and Coastguard Rescue 897 were all deployed. Rescue 897 lowered their winchman to the casualty, who was then flown down to MRT for assessment. Meanwhile, two further members of the party were winched from the gill to waiting MRT team members for safe extraction.
Whilst the aircraft went for fuel, MRT medical technicians assessed the casualty and transported them to a NWAS ambulance. As Rescue 897 returned to collect their winch paramedic, the casualty’s condition began to deteriorate, and the decision was made to fly them directly to hospital for further treatment.
We wish the casualty a speedy recovery.
Many thanks to Duddon MRT and Rescue 897 for their assistance.
