A call was received from Cumbria Police about a walker who had fallen awkwardly in the boulder field near Broad Crag summit. He had suffered painful facial injuries. A full callout was made and extra support for a long and difficult stretcher carry was requested and received from Duddon and Furness MRT.
However, Coastguard helicopter Rescue 199 also responded from Prestwick and was able to land and assess the walker. He was able to walk to the aircraft, thus allowing a swift transfer to hospital for further assessment and treatment. The advance team then met up with the casualty’s wife and walked down to Brackenclose.
Thanks to Duddon and Furness MRT and also to the crew of Rescue 199 for their help to avoid a difficult and hazardous stretcher carry for the teams.
Incident started at 11:50 and ended at 16:58 making 5.1 hrs in total. There were 11 Wasdale team members involved and the incident occured at NY218075. Total rescuer hours: 56
