North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust received a call from a male and his son who were struggling to descend in the dark. The male reported sore knees, slowing their progress and making the descent more difficult.
MRT deployed to their location and walked them to the stretcher box at Styhead. As daylight began to break, both were happy to continue descending without further assistance.
Many thanks to Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team for supporting the incident due to low Wasdale numbers.
Safety Message
We’ve seen a noticeable rise in incidents where walkers become benighted on the high fells. This isn’t about criticising anyone — plans change, people get delayed, and the mountains can be demanding.
However, a few recurring factors are worth highlighting:
– Late start times, leaving walkers short of daylight on long routes.
– No head torches, making safe navigation impossible once darkness arrives.
– Overestimating personal pace and capability, especially on big days like Scafell Pike.
Darkness is inevitable — it arrives every single day — so planning for it is essential. Choosing an appropriate start time, knowing your own pace, and carrying a working head torch for every member of the group can make all the difference.
The fells are incredible places. A little preparation helps ensure everyone enjoys them safely and gets home under their own steam.

Incident started at 00:11 and ended at 06:00 making 5.8 hrs in total. There were 4 Wasdale team members involved and the incident occured at NY 21780 08280. Total rescuer hours: 23
