The team was called by the North West Ambulance Service about a walker who was suffering from a medical emergency with ongoing bleeding. She was at the summit of Scafell Pike several hundred metres above the cloud base.
The team was rapidly called out, and urgent helicopter assistance was also requested. Helimed 08 from Blackpool quickly mobilised but was thwarted by the weather and low cloud base. Coastguard helicopter Rescue 199 also responded but was unable to access, however, stood by to support in any way possible.
With a rapid evacuation ruled out, team members made their way as quickly as possible to the walker’s location; now at Lingmell Col, but unable to proceed further. Once on scene the walker was sheltered and assessed in cold and windy conditions in the mist, whilst awaiting further support from the other team members. Further treatment was provided, before transferring to the team stretcher and beginning the descent. The plan was to stretcher below the cloud base, then to winch from Rescue 199, and provide the quickest route to hospital care. However, turbulent winds again prevented safe conditions to hover, and they had to abort once again.
Thus, a stretcher descent all the way to Brackenclose was required, before a transfer to the helicopter and a flight to hospital for further treatment.
We would like to thank both helicopter crews for their support, and we hope the walker has a full and quick recovery.
