North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust received a call regarding five 17‑year‑olds, one of whom was reported to have a leg injury, and who had been out all night in the Upper Esk. The call was initially routed to Keswick Mountain Rescue Team they quickly passed it to Wasdale. An iPhone Emergency SOS activation was also received.
The MRT Team Leader contacted the SOS centre to establish the group’s location. Given the report of a leg injury, their age, and the fact they were wet, cold, and overdue, a full team callout was initiated. Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team were requested to assist, and Maritime and Coastguard Agency Rescue 336 (Caernarfon) was also tasked.
R336 were first on scene, located the group, and airlifted all five down the valley. They were checked over by MRT and no evidence of any leg injury was found; all appeared well despite the overnight exposure.
The group were transported back to base and handed over to Cumbria Police due to their age.
Incident started at 05:25 and ended at 11:00 making 5.6 hrs in total. There were 18 Wasdale team members involved and the incident occured at NY 22508 06617. Total rescuer hours: 101
