Crag Training
Realistic conditions (wet, windy and going dark) for crag training in Eskdale saw the team practice ropework principles, personal safety and a pick-off rescue.

Huge congratulations to our ‘Class of ‘21’ probationary members who successfully completed a mock callout this morning as their last training exercise. Following a great morning on the fell in the sunshine in Mosedale they returned to base for a richly deserved buffet. They are now full team members. Joining them on the training exercise was the ‘Class of ‘22’ who have also now transitioned to become fell-going probationary members. Rather predictably they did not Read more…
Last Friday, Fiona Roberts and Terry Wake presented a cheque to the team on behalf of Drigg and Carleton Gala. It’s a popular community event which they have run every year until the pandemic took hold. The cheque was for £100 collected in 2018 so the presentation has been much delayed, but no less welcome for the wait. Thanks for the support and we will be at this year’s event on Saturday 11 June. We are fundraising for Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team this Friday 18th March and we will be running the refreshments stall at Egremont Farmer’s Market 9.30am – 12.30pm which is in the Market Hall just off the Main Street ( lots of other lovely crafts and home produce stall etc there also) Any donations would be VERY gratefully received.
Monday’s team training was a practical exercise. We removed a stretcher from a tricky position at the base of a crag, then transferred onto the stretcher wheel when we reached easier ground below. These are core skills for us and it is good to train with a few rucksacks so we are well drilled for the real emergencies.
The team have just enjoyed an excellent long weekend in the Scottish Highlands carrying out Winter skills training. The course was attended by both experienced team members and probationary members. Despite some challenging Scottish winter conditions, lots of new skills were acquired and existing skills refreshed and improved. A great time was had by all. A big thanks to Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team who helped to cover the patch whilst many of the Read more…
Last week we were delighted to welcome our new probationary intake at their first full team training session. We walked through a callout in ‘slow time’ from the initial 999 call to the debrief and restocking of vehicles. We wish them all the best and thank them in advance for their commitment to the team.
Members of the team were delighted and humbled to meet up once more with Allan and Marie Brown. The Brown family and friends have been huge supporters of the team since they tragically lost their son Chris to a fall on Scafell Pike in 2019 and we helped to recover him from the fell. They brought along the latest amazing donation from their fundraising this time – well over £1500. This was raised from a Read more…
Some of our members were out and about in Whitehaven & Egremont today fundraising for the team. It was great to meet you all on our annual flag day and, as always we appreciate your support! A fantastic £2,162.26 was raised in total. Thanks to the Egremont Crab Fair & World Gurning Championships Committee who managed to persuade Santa to stop by too!! 🎅
Team members will be at Egremont Farmers market this coming Friday 3rd December from 9.30am. Team merchandise will be available to purchase to raise funds for the team (ideal stocking fillers 🎅🎄), or just stop by for a chat and say hello! The items are also available via this website if you can’t make it! Thank you for supporting Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team.
Last Monday’s training covered putting on snow chains ready for winter. This weekend’s weather proved their use as several mountain teams had vehicles out in snow. Also we tested out our new wheel from Lyon Equipment to good effect!
Another massive thank you to all Co-op customers who have nominated our team as their good cause as part of the Co-op local community fund. In March 2021 we received our first payment and we have now received at total of £8,584.07. Thank you to the Co-op staff for arranging this and to the customers for the support!
This year has seen a significant milestone with John Noake achieving 50 years of service in the Wasdale team. This is a huge achievement and congratulations must go to him for his efforts over that time. Next year will see Sue Noake reach that milestone too and both have said that they would like to celebrate the event jointly next summer. Team treasurer John Noake is pictured receiving his framed certificate from team chair John Read more…
On Saturday 13th of November the Brown family organised a fundraising event in aid of the team and in memory of Chris Brown. It was a snooker, pool and darts competition with evening entertainment and a raffle at Brigham and district social club. The fantastic sum of £1,506.30 was raised. Well done to everyone involved!
Four siblings jointly donated £4,000 recently from their father’s estate. James Mallin was a keen fell walker all his life, from the age of 14 until well into his 90s and donated to mountain rescue regularly. Here is a picture of James and one of his daughters handing over the cheque. Thank you to the Mallin family for thinking of us!
Sunday 29 October is Mountain and Cave Rescue Awareness Day, on the day when the clocks go back, and we remind walkers it will get dark an hour earlier in the afternoon, and not to get caught out.
One of the team’s more interesting rescues of the year was aired recently on BBC’s Close Calls: On Camera with Nick Knowles. It included the normal foot power and team vehicles, but also the team boat and a Great North Air Ambulance Service helicopter. All motive power worked in perfect harmony to access, treat and evacuate a casualty on the Wasdale Screes. The lady had broken her ankle badly and was in severe pain and Read more…
Team Members were delighted to meet Jon Ryley and his friends at the weekend at Base. Jon has been raising money for the team during 2020 and 2021. We are very grateful for his support, and congratulate him on his achievement. Jon said: “A proud and defining moment having reached the top of Scafell Pike having walked over 2000 miles and raised over £3700 for Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team, who provide search and rescue cover Read more…
The 12 mountain rescue teams in Cumbria were jointly nominated for The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS) by Superintendent Matthew Kennerley in 2019. QAVS is the MBE equivalent for an organisation rather than an individual. It was in April 2020 when the teams were notified that they had been successful and began using the coveted QAVS Logo on all communications. However, due to the pandemic it was only in September 2021 that the opportunity Read more…
As part of Jacob’s Field Solutions behavioural safety scheme, one of their employees raised a safety observation. This was chosen as the best that month and as a result a cheque for £100 was donated to a charity of his choice. In September he chose Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team. Here is photo of Jacob’s Field Solutions HSE Manager, Bernard Burns handing over the cheque to team member Mike Smith. Thanks for the support!
