2022 Probationer Intake

Last week we were delighted to welcome our new probationary intake at their first full team training session. We walked through a callout in ‘slow time’ from the initial 999 call to the debrief and restocking of vehicles. We wish them all the best and thank them in advance for their commitment to the team.

Fundraising in memory of Chris Brown

Members of the team were delighted and humbled to meet up once more with Allan and Marie Brown. The Brown family and friends have been huge supporters of the team since they tragically lost their son Chris to a fall on Scafell Pike in 2019 and we helped to recover him from the fell. They brought along the latest amazing donation from their fundraising this time – well over £1500. This was raised from a Read more…

Winter Team Training

Last Monday’s training covered putting on snow chains ready for winter. This weekend’s weather proved their use as several mountain teams had vehicles out in snow. Also we tested out our new wheel from Lyon Equipment to good effect!

This is a huge achievement and congratulations must go to him for his efforts over that time. Next year will see Sue Noake reach that milestone too and both have said that they would like to celebrate the event jointly next summer. Mallin Family Donation

Four siblings jointly donated £4,000 recently from their father’s estate. James Mallin was a keen fell walker all his life, from the age of 14 until well into his 90s and donated to mountain rescue regularly. Here is a picture of James and one of his daughters handing over the cheque. Thank you to the Mallin family for thinking of us!

BBC’s Close Calls: On Camera with Nick Knowles

One of the team’s more interesting rescues of the year was aired recently on BBC’s Close Calls: On Camera with Nick Knowles. It included the normal foot power and team vehicles, but also the team boat and a Great North Air Ambulance Service helicopter. All motive power worked in perfect harmony to access, treat and evacuate a casualty on the Wasdale Screes. The lady had broken her ankle badly and was in severe pain and Read more…

The 12 mountain rescue teams in Cumbria given The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service

The 12 mountain rescue teams in Cumbria were jointly nominated for The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS) by Superintendent Matthew Kennerley in 2019. QAVS is the MBE equivalent for an organisation rather than an individual. It was in April 2020 when the teams were notified that they had been successful and began using the coveted QAVS Logo on all communications. However, due to the pandemic it was only in September 2021 that the opportunity Read more…

Thanks to Jacob’s Field Solutions behavioural safety scheme

As part of Jacob’s Field Solutions behavioural safety scheme, one of their employees raised a safety observation. This was chosen as the best that month and as a result a cheque for £100 was donated to a charity of his choice. In September he chose Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team. Here is photo of Jacob’s Field Solutions HSE Manager, Bernard Burns handing over the cheque to team member Mike Smith. Thanks for the support!

Rescue on Great Gable – Arrow Head Gulley

A nine hour rescue for the Wasdale team running from one day into early morning the next. Two walkers on Great Napes, Great Gable in Wasdale – luckily they decided to hold their position above a considerable drop in Arrow Head Gulley. A very slippery and loose area with rock falls a real risk for both rescuers and casualties. Here is a video of the rescue. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54vFPnVpbS4
