At the start of the summer holidays take a moment to watch, read and share some advice in how to enjoy the Lakes and surrounding waters safely

Do not
swim alone

Always use a bright tow float and cap for visibility

Enter the water slowly and get used to it

Check the depth of the waterbed by walking in carefully

Work out where you will exit the water safely

Don’t be tempted to stay in too long

Wear a wetsuit, if possible, to keep you warmer and more buoyant

Swim along the shoreline so you can easily get out when you need to

Have lots of layers, a hat, and a warm drink for when you get out, even in summer

Never drink alcohol and swim

Also, be on the lookout for blue green algae, which occurs naturally in freshwater lakes and poses a small risk to human health, but it can be lethal for dogs if they come into contact with it. The advice is not to swim if you spot it

Ask yourself 3 questions before you set off:
– Am I confident I have the KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS for the day?
– Do I know what the WEATHER will be like?
– Do I have the right GEAR?
